Mukherjee Nagar sword-wielding incident: HC seeks answers

Protests outside Mukherjee Nagar police station
NEW DELHI: Delhi high court on Wednesday directed the Centre, AAP government and Delhi Police to express their stand in the Mukherjee Nagar incident in which a road accident led to a clash between a tempo driver and police personnel. The court has also asked an officer of the rank of joint commissioner of police to file a report in the incident.
A bench of Justices Jayant Nath and Najmi Waziri posted the matter for July 2 after taking up two pleas that sought compensation for the driver and his son, besides a court-monitored probe into the incident. While one petition has been filed by Dr Seema Singhal through advocates Sangeeta Bharti and Rubinder Ghumman, the other was filed by Manjeet Singh Chugh.
The bench said that the incident is evidence of police brutality and how a uniformed force ought not to act. “It could create disquiet in the society. You have to show you are with the citizens. That is what the citizens, including children, want,” the bench said.
The court asked how a minor could be treated in such a manner while he was only trying to save his father. Police were accordingly asked to identify the officers who assaulted the minor. Media has been restrained from revealing the identity of the minor.

Delhi Police informed the court that FIRs were lodged on complaints from both sides and Crime Branch has been entrusted with the investigation. Three officers identified from the videos were suspended and an officer of joint commissioner of police rank was heading an independent inquiry into the incident.
Meanwhile, AAP MLA Jarnail Singh has written to Union home minister Amit Shah asking him to take strict action in the incident. He wrote, “I hope the home minister looks into the law and order situation in the capital and takes strict steps so that such incidents do not recur.” He also urged Shah to take action against the cops involved in the incident.
