Binu Pappachan, 46, was arrested for
threatening a Chennai-based businessman by demanding protection money, in Mangadu on Tuesday night. He was in a hideout after being released on
bail in June last year.
Based on a specific tip-off, police team rounded him up near Mangadu, where he holed up to execute an extortion bid. On spotting the police team, Binu and his aides tried to escape. However, the team led by the assistant commissioner of police Sembedu Babu nabbed him.
Police have kept a tab on active criminals in the city. After the cops received information about Binu’s visit to Red Hills and Mangadu area, police were on high alert. It was then police received a complaint from the businessman, a native of Red Hills, about the extortion bid and swung into action and traced Binu’s whereabouts.
Binu was produced before a magistrate court in Poonamallee and was remanded in the Puzhal prison.
Binu is a native of Thrissur in Kerala. He worked at a tea stall in Chennai and later became involved in crimes. He turned infamous after his 45th birthday celebration on February 6, 2018, where he invited about 200 goons and henchmen. His birthday celebrations went viral in social media after he cut his birthday cake with a
machete.
