LUCKNOW: A 28-year-old businessman died early on Wednesday of a bullet wound received during a scuffle with his wife’s kin in
Sitapur district. While his family has claimed murder, police suspect accidental firing and are waiting for the postmortem report.
According to sources in police, deceased Ankit Kumar tied the
knot with Sunita Kumari last year, but it was never a happy union. On Monday, Sunita left her husband after a spat and, escorted by brother Harish, went to live with her parents in Rausa area. On Tuesday night, Ankit reached her village with three friends and tried to coax his wife to come back.
“The couple quarrelled over domestic matters and the situation quickly turned ugly. We have reports that say Ankit trained a countrymade pistol at Sunita’s other brother Akash. When her family members tried to disarm him, the trigger went off accidentally and Ankit sustained a bullet wound in the stomach,” said Rausa station house officer NS Sirohi.
The businessman was rushed to the community health centre, but referred to the district hospital. Doctors at
Sitapur hospital in turn referred him to KGMU Trauma Centre in Lucknow. Ankit died on his way to the state capital.
SHO Sirohi said police had received two sets of complaint. “One from friends and family of the deceased and another from his father-in-law. The first accuses Sunita’s brothers of shooting Ankit dead while the other claims he committed suicide. We are probing all theories and waiting for autopsy details,” the officer added.
