AHMEDABAD: City police on Wednesday booked a 29-year-old man for molesting a 23-year-old woman at a paying guest (PG) facility in a flat in Navrangpura.
The accused was identified as Bhavin Shah, a resident of Naroda and native of Dehgam. He has been a food delivery worker for about a year. His mother has been working as a domestic help in Naroda area since his father’s death. After completing Class XII, Shah started doing odd jobs, said a police official, adding that he is unmarried.
“We caught the accused from Chandkheda when he went to deliver food to someone. We had distributed his photographs to food delivery companies to trace him. The people at
Uber Eats identified him as Bhavin Shah, who had worked with them. They provided his details,” said DCP Zone-1, P L Mal.
Mal said that Shah confessed to the crime and said that he he had gone to the PG facility specifically to sexually abuse women.
The FIR filed with Navrangpura police on Wednesday states the complainant is a native of Dungarpur in Rajasthan and worked at the PG facility as a domestic help. She was sleeping after taking some pills for her cold and cough on June 14, when the accused silently entered the room and molested her.
CCTV footage shows Shah, in a yellow T-shirt and jeans, enter the flat at around 12.50am on June 14. He looks around to make sure no one is watching him and starts molesting the woman. He then he unzips his pants and masturbates beside the sleeping woman.
He then entered another room to find other targets but one woman saw him. He then rushed out and escaped.
Marked the women during pizza deliveryShah had first seen the women when he went to deliver pizza at the PG facility around two months ago. During his primary questioning, Shah said that he had gone during midnight to deliver pizza to some girls in the PG and decided that he would once again go there to sexually abuse the girls whom he found very fashionable from their western clothes, said a cop.
Cops tracked him through food delivery appAfter police learned that the accused was a food delivery man, they started tracking his cellphone. Besides, they also took help of the food delivery firm’s app and found him at Chandkheda. He was nabbed by the cops before he could deliver food. A cop said that Shah covered his face with a handkerchief to conceal his identity and continued to deliver food to customers. But he was not aware that he could be nabbed by his cellphone location.
Claims this was his first offencePolice have also begun interrogating if he had molested other women too or whether the incident at the Navrangpura PG facility was his first crime. During primary questioning, he said that he had targeted the complainant as she was sleeping. When cops asked him whether he had abused other women in the past, he remained silent for some time then denied committing any other offences.
