Woman arrested after ex-girlfriend's death near Sydney unit complex

A "vulnerable" woman has been arrested on the Sea Cliff Bridge after the suspicious death of a woman believed to be her ex-girlfriend outside a Zetland unit block on Monday night.

Emergency services were called to the rear of the unit block on Rose Valley Way, Zetland, about 8.45pm after the woman, 23, was found "suffering injuries on the footpath", NSW Police said in a statement.

Redfern police officers at the scene attempted to revive her but were unsuccessful, the statement said.

Strike Force Deepfield investigators spent Tuesday looking for Zixi Wang, 29, also known as Jessie, who police say “has an outstanding warrant in relation to the matter”.

Botany Bay Police Area Command Commander Superintendent Bradley Hodder had earlier told reporters that "she will be able to help establish what possible happened at the scene".

"We're concerned for her welfare as well and we'd like her to come forward," he said.

"I believe she's in a vulnerable state."

She was last seen in a white Mercedes-Benz driving away from Rose Valley Way.

"We've got a lady at the bottom of a building block and we're carrying out our investigation in order to work out what happened," Superintendent Hodder said.

The circumstances leading up to the woman's death are unknown, however the Herald has confirmed she had suffered injuries before being found on the concrete outside the 11-floor apartment block. A nearby fence showed signs of significant damage.

The Meriton building the woman plunged from and the purpose-built street surrounding it were constructed about a year ago.

Detectives from the Botany area command and the state crime command's homicide squad have ruled out self-harm and are looking closely at injuries the woman suffered before her death.

Mid-morning Tuesday, police forensic technicians arrived on the scene, and they were expected to spend most of the day inside the apartment.

Police have also seized a computer from the apartment, which will be taken for forensic analysis.

On Tuesday morning, residents of the apartment block told reporter they heard a woman screaming before the body was found.

"Just screaming. It sounded like someone young, a female," one resident said.

Police are speaking to neighbours, who told the Herald they heard screaming from a fifth floor on Monday night.

"It went on for 10 minutes," said one neighbour who did not wish to be named.

"It sounded like a man and a woman who knew each other, like painful screaming."

Neighbour Hannah Tjan told the Herald that she was deeply unsettled by the events of Monday night.

"I'm scared. I don't feel safe," she said.

A spokeswoman for NSW Police said a call for assistance initially came through from concerned residents.
