Water tanker kills woman, injures 3 in Nerkundram

CHENNAI: A water tanker smashed into four people at Nerkundram on Monday, killing a woman.
The accident took place at 4.30am. The deceased was identified as Kaliammal, 44, of Perumal Koil Street in Nerkundram. The injured were Vijaykumar, 59, her husband, Tamil Selvan, 31, of Gummidipoondi and Bakiyaraj, 33, of Nerkundram.

Vijayakumar and his wife were waiting for an auto. The tanker which was going to Maduravoyal rammed two parked motorbikes and then plouged into the group at the bus stop. Kaliammal was dragged for about 30m, after which the vehicle came to a halt.
A witness said there was no time to run for safety as the driver could not bring the vehicle under control. He managed to escape from the scene but was later arrested and identified as Vijaya Balan of Myiladuthurai. Investigations revealed he had dozed off at the wheels which led to the accident. Police registered a case of causing death due to negligence, rash and negligent driving.
