A husky owner has been left traumatised after she was brutally mauled by a rottweiler while taking her dog for an afternoon walk.

Lauren Nunn was walking her husky Lola in Hoppers Crossing, in south-west Melbourne, on Tuesday afternoon when a rottweiler suddenly attacked her.

Ms Nunn desperately picked up her dog and tried to fight off the animal, which bit her on the arm five times.

'It was terrifying … if my hand wasn't on my dog I don't know what would have happened,' Ms Nunn told 7NEWS

The dog sprinted down a driveway towards the pair as they walked along a suburban street.

Over a terrifying 30 seconds, the savage dog pounced at Ms Nunn and Lola ten times.

The pet owner was left bleeding on the road and suffered deep cuts to her arm.

The nightmare didn't end until a neighbour saw the horrifying scene after hearing loud screams, and ran out to intervene.

'If he hadn't come out the dog just would've kept going,' Ms Nunn said.

Ms Nunn said both her and Lola have been scarred by the horrifying experience.

'The thought of going past the house and the dog again, I just wouldn't go through it,' she said.

The owner of the violent rottweiler hid the dog and the council are currently searching for it.
