As the Lok Sabha session enters Day 2 on Tuesday, BJP will be appointing MP Om Birla as the Speaker of the House.

According to sources, two-time MP from Rajasthan's Kota, Om Birla will be the Speaker for the 17th Lok Sabha that began its session on Monday.

Meanwhile, Om Birla's wife Amit Birla told ANI that it was a very proud moment for the family. "It is a very proud and a happy moment for us. We are very thankful to the cabinet for choosing him," she said.

The Opposition will also be supporting Om Birla as the next Lok Sabha Speaker.

Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has passed a resolution to support NDA candidate Om Birla for his candidature for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker.

Ten parties, including National People's Party, Mizo National Front, Lok Janshakti Party, YSR Congress Party, JD(U), AIADMK, Apna Dal and BJD will be supporting Om Birla's candidature for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker.

Om Birla will file his nomination around 12 noon today.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, BJP's Om Birla defeated Congress's Ramnarayan Meena with a huge margin of over 2.5 lakh votes in the Kota-Bundi Lok Sabha seat.

Om Birla, 57, has been MLA from Rajasthan thrice and MP twice.

Om Birla will be replacing previous Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan who did not contest the Lok Sabha elections this year.

Once nominated, Birla, who won from Kota-Bundi parliamentary seat in Rajasthan, will easily become the Speaker as the National Democratic Alliance has a clear majority in the House.

If necessary, the election for the post may be held on Wednesday.

On Monday, President Ram Nath Kovind swore in seven-term member of Parliament Virendra Kumar as the pro tem Speaker of Lok Sabha.

Pro tem Speaker Virendra Kumar had on Monday administered the oath of office to over 300 MPs on Monday.

As soon as the new Speaker is appointed, Virendra Kumar's role will cease to exist.

Usually, seniority is considered for Lok Sabha speaker's post but there have been instances when first-time and second-time lawmakers were elected for the chair.
