Three men have been arrested over the alleged gang rape of a woman on her 21st birthday over 20 years ago.

'Eve' was allegedly sexually assaulted by at least four men in an apartment in Brisbane's West End in 1995.

Her real name is hidden to protect her identity.

Police arrested a 47-year-old Brisbane man, 53-year-old Adelaide man and a 43-year-old Sydney man on Tuesday after an investigation spanning decades.

The trio have been charged with sexual assault offences and will appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

A photo of Eve posing with a 'happy birthday' plate was taken at her family party in a Brisbane CBD restaurant just hours before the alleged rape, ABC News reports.

She later joined a friend at the now-closed Gig nightclub in inner-city suburb Fortitude Valley.

Eve was 'very drunk' and affected by anxiety medication when she left the club by herself to get a taxi at 5am.

A young man allegedly offered to give her a lift home but instead took her to an apartment where four men were waiting in the West End.

'We are going to have our own party,' the men allegedly told her.

The young woman screamed for the men stop as they allegedly brutally raped her - making her fear for her life.

They allegedly handled her 'like some kind of ragdoll for them to pass around'.

The traumatic experience made Eve suicidal - forcing her into a psychiatric hospital.

She is frustrated it has taken so long for police to make arrests.

'I'm so glad they have made progress in the case, but also angry that it's taken this long… a quarter of a century,' she told ABC News.

'I'm angry that I had to fight and keep pushing the police for them to just look at the case, for them to finally arrest somebody.

'For 20-some years, they did not even want to investigate the case.'

The case was further set back when it was revealed her dress, underwear and other potential sources of DNA had allegedly been destroyed by police last year.
