Apple iPhones for 2020 to come with 5G, OLED screens: Report
  • Analyst Kuo predicts 5G, OLED screens on 2020 iPhone line-up
  • Apple's proprietary 5G baseband chip won't be ready until 2022, so Apple will rely on Qualcomm to get the job done till then

Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the most trusted sources for news and analysis on upcoming Apple hardware, released a report in which he predicted that the iPhone line-up for 2020 would come with 5G and OLED screens. The screen size of the 2020 models would be 6.7 inches, 5.4 inches, and 6.1 inches. Only a handful of publications were privy to Kuo’s report, one amongst which was 9to5Mac, which believes the 6.1-inch model will be the successor to the iPhone XR (or rather, its 2019 equivalent). The other two models are expected to support 5G as standard.

The regular “non-Max” version of the iPhone is expected to come with a 5.4-inch OLED screen next year, while the larger Max version is expected to feature a 6.7-inch OLED screen. In comparison, the current iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max come with a 5.8-inch and a 6.5-inch screen respectively. What that means is that the regular iPhone will become smaller by 0.4 inches and the Max version of the iPhone will become larger 0.2 inches.

According to the popular market analyst Kuo, Apple’s proprietary 5G baseband chip won’t be ready until 2022. So the next few iterations of Apple’s smartphone line-up will rely on baseband chips made by Qualcomm. That said, Kuo believes Apple will still make its own amplifier and RF antenna designs. Though the new 5G-enabled iPhones are slated for launch in  2020, they won’t enter the market before autumn. So there will be a good long wait before we find out if Kuo is right.

While Kuo is busy making his predictions for next year’s iPhones, we have yet to see Apple’s iPhone offerings for this year. The iPhone 11 line-up is expected to come with a square rear camera setup. European mobile accessories maker Olixar recently made its iPhone 11 camera protectors available online. Going by the cut-outs on the protectors, we can tell that the iPhone 11 and its Max version will come with three sensors on the back. The “R” version, on the other hand, will settle for a dual camera setup.
