University students have complained about sitting through an eight-hour exam - but the school says it helps teach youngsters about the 'real world'.
About 130 students at the University of Wollongong in New South Wales were given a take-home, open-book exam for a marketing subject on Sunday from 10am until 6pm.
The university said it was a scenario-based exercise designed to simulate a workplace, so the exam lasted as long as one business day.
The final year students, however, are not convinced about the university's maiden approach.
'I didn't complete the exam. I just submitted and kinda gave up the exam because it was really difficult,' third year student Soutara Potter told Nine News.
'Lots of people are really upset about it especially in an exam period where you are preparing for up to three other exams,' another student said.
'How can you expect someone to sit down for eight hours and be able to focus. That's ridiculous.'
UOW defended its position saying this activity was foreshadowed when students enrolled in the subject.
'It was clearly stated in the subject outline and the two tutorials held prior to the study recess were devoted specifically to preparing students for this exam,' a university spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.
'Students were expected to manage their own time and personal needs during the activity, as would be expected of a marketing professional in the workplace.'
It said support was provided during the exam to help students clarify questions without assisting them with answers.
The university said it will evaluate students' response before undertaking the same exercise next year.
