Dravida Tamizhar Katchi has urged the district administration to provide basic amenities to 200-odd Dalit residents, who are living in Pattanam Panchayat for 10 years. The outfit’s south district secretary N. Dhanapal, in his petition submitted at the weekly grievance day meeting on Monday, said that the residents were living for the past 10 years on lands that the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department had allotted by issuing free title deeds (patta).

To date, the residents did not have road, street light, drinking water or other basic amenities, he said.

‘Disburse fund’

I Rashida, wife of Farooq of Ukkadam South, sought the district administration’s intervention in early disbursement of Victim Compensation Fund. In her petition, submitted at the grievance meeting, she said that after her husband’s murder on June 13, 2017 she had applied to the District Legal Services Authority for assistance under the scheme.

The district Sessions Court had on April 12, 2019 ordered disbursement of compensation through the Authority Chairman. But to date, she had not received the compensation, Ms. Rashida said.

Auto drivers’ plea

Autorickshaw drivers’ union Kovai Mavatta Bharathiya Pokkuvarathu Auto, Tempo, Minidor Thozhilalar Sangam petitioned the district administration to implement metered fare in the district. It said though the autorickshaw drivers and their unions were agreeable to the fare – a minimum of ₹30 for the first 1.5 km and ₹15 for every km thereafter, the administration was not taking steps and the State Government remained indifferent.

‘Expedite probe’

Members of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi along with a few duped investors of a finance firm resorted to a flash strike in front of the Coimbatore Collectorate on Monday before petitioning the administration to expedite investigation into a finance firm.

Threat to livelihood

Kavundampalayam Jeeva Nagar residents alleged that they were being threatened to move to tenements built by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board. They were living in the area for the past 40 years and their livelihood was in the area’s neighbourhood. They were also being threatened with power and water supply disconnection.

Farmers’ demand

Farmers belonging to Tamil Nadu Vivasayeegal Sangam that is affiliated to the All India Kisan Sabha sought closure of a quarry at Muduthurai village in Karamadai Panchayat Union.

The use of explosives to blast rocks affected the residents, farmers and their cattle, they said.
