JALANDHAR: A day after a Sikh auto driver and his minor son were beaten up with lathis by at least five men of Delhi Police, parties and politicians in Punjab sought action against the cops involved on Monday.
Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and Aam Aadmi Party appeared on the same page in condemning the incident and demanding action against the cops.
The protesting Sikh leaders and other activists kept on streaming their protest live which was widely shared and viewed and by midnight it had already become a major issue. By Monday morning, political leaders of Punjab condemned the incident. “Shameful incident of @DelhiPolice ruthlessly beating up Sarabjeet Singh & Balwant Singh over a petty issue. Request HM @AmitShah to ensure justice,” tweeted Captain Amarinder.
“We are taking up the issue at the highest level. This is disgraceful and unforgivable. We will ensure that guilty are brought to book,” tweeted Sukhbir.
He posted another tweet: “There is no place in democracy for inhuman conduct against anyone. I urge @AmitShah to dismiss policemen responsible for brutal attack on innocent Sikhs in Delhi yesterday. Attempt to murder cases should also be registered against cops. I commend DSGMC for taking up the case forcefully.”

Delhi chief minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal visited the house of auto driver Sarabjeet Singh and termed the incident as an example of “Delhi Police brutality”. He sought action against the “guilty”. The Punjab unit of AAP wanted the Modi government to show “sensitivity” towards minority communities and protect religious identities and sentiments.
As the video of the incident went viral by Sunday night, scores of Sikhs gathered outside Mukherjee Nagar police station, located close to the incident site. Soon, Sikh leaders who often remain at loggerheads converged there. DSGMC president and BJP MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa, former DSGMC presidents Manjit Singh GK and Paramjit Singh Sarna, AAP MLA Jarnail Singh also visited the spot, seeking action against the cops.
