Traffic cop held with liquor, dismissed

Nagpur: Traffic constable Sachin Hande, attached to Sitabuldi division, was dismissed from service by the Joint commissioner of police Ravindra Kadam on Tuesday. He was earlier caught, along with one Pranav Mhaisekar, by Chandrapur police near Nanduri toll naka on June 9 while ferrying foreign liquors in a car in the dry district.

Hande and Mhaisekar were arrested by Warora police of Chandrapur district after seizing two cartons of liquor in their car. The car was driven by Mhaisekar. Hande, who was in uniform despite being a holiday, had tried to mislead the cops. Warora police was also granted two days of custody remand by the court for detailed investigation. It’s learnt that the car was in the name of Mhaisekar’s mother who is a medical practitioner too.
City police top brass, after receiving the official reports from their Chandrapur counterparts, decided to invoke the powers granted to competent authority under article 311 (2) (B) of the Indian constitution to remove Hande from service for maligning the image of the department. The city police also cited the nexus of Hande with criminals and racketeers as the other reason for his dismissal. Another ground, proposed to dismiss Hande, was that he may influence, threaten and intimidate the witnesses if any inquiry is instituted against him.
