Ludhiana: Police have arrested a woman for duping Rs15 lakh from an Abohar-based man for getting his kidney transplant done. Her accomplice has also been booked, who is on the run. The arrested woman has been identified as Shweta of Dholewal, and her booked accomplice is Bunti of the same locality.
In his complaint to the police, Munish Kumar (27) of Abohar said he had a kidney-related disease, for which he had started visiting a city-based private hospital in 2017 regularly for dialysis. In hospital, he met the accused woman who claimed to be a doctor. The woman claimed she would get his kidney transplant done in Rs25 lakh. They also assured to complete all legal procedures for which they kept taking money from him.
Munish added that days later, the accused woman called her to her house in Dholewal, where she introduced the second accused Bunti as her brother. Further, he said the accused took Rs15 lakh from him in 2017 and 2018. The accused also took him to different hospitals of Jalandhar and Chandigarh., but every time they would return after some medical tests. When Munish pressurized him for a transplant, the accused started making excuses. When he asked a return of his money, the accused started ignoring him.
Thereafter, on May 30, Munish Kumar lodged a police complaint, following which Division 8 police registered a case under Section 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC against the accused. Soon, after lodging an FIR, the police arrested the woman from her house, while her accomplice is absconding.
On asking about the previous cases of the accused, the assistant commissioner of police (ACP-Civil Lines) Mandeep Singh said the police were verifying if the accused had duped more people in this manner.
