A Bhiwandi couple allegedly running a clinic without registered degrees have come under the scanner of the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC) and the police. While the couple were interrogated on Friday, the police said they are likely to be arrested by Monday.
According to officials from Bhiwandi police station, the incident came to light after a social worker tipped off the BNMC about the clinic run by Biju Topil (50) and Valsa Topil (49) last week.
“The couple run MS Clinic at Nai Basti in Bhiwandi. Civic officials visited the clinic on Friday and conducted inquiries following the complaint. They approached us on Saturday and we verified the inquiry they had conducted,” an officer from Bhiwandi police station said.
While the couple claimed to hold degrees in bachelor of homeopathic medicine and surgery, the police said they allegedly are not registered with the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC). It is however not yet clear as to how long the couple have been practising in such a manner. The two were also allegedly prescribing allopathic medicines to their patients.
“We have verified with the MMC and found the two are not registered with them. It is unethical to practise without a registered degree and for homoeopathic doctors to distribute allopathy medicines. We have not received any complaints from patients about any side effect of their prescribed medicine so far, but we will take action since the two have flouted the law,” the officer said.
While the investigation is currently under way, the police said the couple will be arrested by Monday.
