Practically speaking, there is no reason to use a theme to your Google account. They don't change the way you use the browser or affect your interaction with Gmail, Google Docs, or any of the other many services Google offers.

But by that logic, there's really no reason for the Louvre, jazz music, "The Godfather Part I" and "Part II," or anything else that makes life more enjoyable but isn't of strictly utilitarian value.

A Google theme may not make your browser faster or answer work emails for you, but a lovely bit of scenery in the background of a new tab you open can make your day a bit more pleasant, and who doesn't want that?

How to change your Google theme in Google Chrome

    1. Open your Google Chrome browser and log into your Google account.

    2. At the top right corner of the screen click More Settings, then click Appearance, and then Themes, or go directly to the Chrome Web Store.

    3. Browse through the themes and select one you like, then click on it.

And that's it, the theme has been added, changing out your old theme or adding one for the first time.

Note that you might need to close all Chrome windows and reopen the browser for the theme to appear.

How to make a custom theme in Google Chrome

    1. Open Google Chrome and log into your Google account.

    2. Navigate to ThemeBeta.

    3. The menu on the side has a numbered list of the steps needed to create a new theme. Start by giving the theme a name.

    5. Use the controls under the preview pane to configure the picture. You can zoom in and out, make the picture repeat, and more.

    6. In the numbered list, click "Generate colors." This will edit the toolbars and menus in the theme to match what you've uploaded.

    7. If you want to edit those colors, click on either "Images" or "Colors" at the top of the list. These will open menus where you can edit each individual part of your theme, right down to the color of the text on your tabs. Whatever you're changing the color of will be highlighted with bright red as you're changing it.

    8. When you're satisfied, click "Pack and Install." This will download a file containing your edited theme.

    9. Google Chrome may be suspicious of the theme file, and ask if you want to keep it. Click "Keep."

    10. Navigate to the folder on your computer where the theme downloaded to. You can do this easily by right-clicking the file in Chrome's download bar and clicking "Show in Finder" or "Show in folder."

    12. In the top-right corner of the page that opens, toggle the "Developer mode" switch so the white circle is on the right.

    13. Drag and drop the theme file from your folder onto this page.

    14. A box will appear, asking if you want to "Add 'ThemeBeta.com'?" Click "Add Theme."

    15. A moment later, the colors on your menu bars should change to whatever you set them to.
