Cloth bag manufacturing unit opened by city corporation

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Two years after city corporation conceived the production and distribution of cloth bags the first decentralised cloth bag manufacturing unit was inaugurated at Muttada by mayor VK Prasanth on Monday. Two other centres were also opened at Vallakadavu and Kunnampara. The city corporation plans to run five centres to supply cloth bags as an alternative to plastic carry bags.
The corporation had initially planned 10 centres to be set up at different places in the city. As per the plan the materials will be supplied from a centralised facility. The civic body shall undertake production and distribution of cloth bags directly and it will be a daunting task for the health wing to gain some ground in the market which had already been dominated by private players. Since corporation imposed ban on plastic carry bags, many retail chains and super markets had switched to cloth bags and paper bags providing business opportunities for private players.
