Chennai resident held for theft

Coimbatore: The rural police on Monday arrested a 40-year-old man from Chennai for stealing 34 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 3.10lakh, which were kept in a parked scooter at Lakshmi Bhavan Complex at Periyanaickenpalayam a week ago. Police recovered 31 sovereigns of gold ornaments from him.
The arrested person was identified as G Venkatesh of Manali in Chennai, an autorickshaw driver.
B Subash Chandra Bose of Gudalur Goundampalayam near Periyanaickenpalayam, who runs a photo studio in Lakshmi Bhavan Complex, had withdrawn the valuables from the Indian Overseas Bank on June 7. He kept them in the box under the scooter seat and returned to the studio. He returned to the parked vehicle after 15 minutes to find the valuables missing.

Based on his complaint, Periyanaickenpalayam police registered a case. Preliminary inquiry revealed that Venkatesh, who was waiting in front of the bank, had noticed Bose carrying the valuables. He followed him to the studio and stole them from the scooter.
Venkatesh told police that he spent the money and sold three sovereigns of gold ornaments.
