The Nilgiris district police organised a motorcycle rally to spread the message about the importance of wearing helmets while riding.
The event was held in Udhagamandalam town, with more than 80 policemen taking part.
Police personnel, accompanied by Nilgiris district superintendent of police, D. Shanmuga Priya and other top police officials in the district, distributed pamphlets to create awareness on how wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler reduces the chance of serious head injuries and death. The rally covered all the major roads within the town.
Police also stopped motorists, who were found riding two-wheelers without wearing a helmet. When the police stopped a couple of daily wage workers on a motorcycle and asked them why they were not wearing helmets, the men told the personnel that they could not afford to buy helmets. Consequently, Ms. Priya after admonishing them for being “irresponsible” and putting their lives at risk, gave away helmets to the duo.
