MANGALURU: It may not be 'futuristic monocycle' that Men in Black buffs watch Agent J (Will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) drive around to apprehend Boris 'The Animal' (Jemaine Clement) in MIB 3. Yet resembling this is 'The MonoWheel' that Prithvi Acharya, Pramod G, Mohith Madhaw, and Naveen Amarannavar, fourth year automobile engineering students of Srinivas Institute of Technology (SIT), Valachil have developed.

Adjudged the best project of their institute, 'The MonoWheel' is a redesigned and fabricated unique bike in its simplest form with the least price tag. This vehicle, a single wheeled bike which has an outer running wheel while the driver is seated inside the circular outer frame, challenges the future of engineering, noted Mohith Madhaw. "The MonoWheel reduces the space occupied by a two-wheeler and negotiate narrow spaces," he said.

On its possible uses, Mohith said it was be used for both industrial and agricultural purposes. The driver has to balance 'The MonoWheel' in its present state, he said, adding the future version could come equipped with gyroscopic sensors that will help in auto-balancing. The prototype has been built at a cost of Rs 18000, he said, adding if the concept is put in to mass production, the cost could come down by at least 30% at present rates.

Santhosh Kumar, assistant professor, department of automobile engineering, SIT said weight of 'The MonoWheel' can be reduced by 10% or more by carrying out further research on its components. Lauding the initiative of the students, Santhosh also thanked the support from the SIT management that allowed students access to workshop and machinery even after college hours to help fabricate this vehicle as part of the student project.
