KOLKATA: Just when the medical fraternity is facing criticism for their cease-work, three fourth-year students of KPC Medical College (KPCMC) set a precedent on Saturday by saving the life of a patient by donating blood.

Nasima Laskar, 34, was in dire need of blood on Saturday as she was bleeding severely from her uterus. Given the total collapse in the medical services across the state, her husband Amin Ali Laskar was at his wit’s end and had almost given up when the doctors stepped in. “On Friday, my wife needed two units of blood and I could arrange for two donors. But on Saturday, I failed to get any more. Learning of my plight, the junior doctors asked me about my wife’s blood group. In no time, three of them accompanied me to the hospital’s blood bank,” narrated Amin Ali, a blacksmith.
The three fourth-year MBBS students, who left the agitation site on the campus to be by Amin Ali’s side were Chinmay Sharma, Indradeep Saha and Amresh Kumar. “We just did our bit to help a patient in need. We will continue to do so in future as well,” said Sharma.
While two units were transfused on Saturday itself, one unit has been kept in the blood bank for use by any other patient in the hospital.
Nasima had given birth to a stillborn in a government hospital a few weeks ago and doctors found an infection in the uterus to be the cause of the bleeding. Since attempts to control the bleeding failed, they explored the site and determined that hysterectomy was the best treatment option.
“The patient is a beta thalassemia carrier and her haemoglobin count was 7.5. The surgery was an emergency and it could not have been carried out without the blood units. I am proud of my students who have risen above the agitation to save a life. I, however, stand by their demand,” said Dr Ranjan Basu.

The patient, admitted under the doctor who also teaches obstetrics and gynaecology at KPCMC, is recuperating well after the surgery.
The gesture by the doctors has moved the patient’s family. “The junior doctors have saved my family amidst so much of negativity around. I condemn unjustified violence against doctors who save lives,” said Amin Ali.
