Jammu and Kashmir police officer Arshad Ahmed Khan, who was airlifted to the AIIMS in New Delhi earlier this week after being grievously injured in a terrorist attack on a CRPF deployment in south Kashmir’s Anantnag, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.
Five CRPF personnel were killed on Wednesday in the first major attack since Pulwama.
Mr. Khan (40), who was the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Saddar police station in Anantnag, sustained bullet wounds when he rushed to the spot of the attack after the initial burst of gunfire. The bullets hit his liver and duodenum.
An AK-47 toting ‘hardened’ unidentified Pakistani militant opened fire on the CRPF team on the busy Khanbal-Pahalgam road when the security personnel were withdrawing from duty.
The area where the attack took place is the main approach road to the Amarnath shrine. The Amarnath Yatra commences on July 1 and more than two lakh pilgrims are expected to visit the shrine. Around 30,000 security personnel would be deployed for the Yatra security.
