NEW DELHI: A man has been arrested for allegedly running an extortion racket while posing as a senior TV news journalist. The accused, Sudhir, was nabbed while trying to collect Rs 2 lakh from a traffic police cop whom he had been blackmailing.
Police said that the accused is a resident of Narela and was a part of a gang that blackmailed shop owners and policemen all over the city. The accused was nabbed near Narela while his associate escaped.
The gang came up on the police radar after several complaints were received by traffic police personnel, where they said that a man claiming to be a journalist of a popular media house blackmailed them with videos of them allegedly indulging in malpractices. The man would threaten to air the videos on his channel if the personnel didn’t pay up.
Similar complaints were also received from some shopkeepers, who were also blackmailed by a group of men claiming to be journalists.

After a traffic police constable posted at Mangolpuri circle complained of being blackmailed for Rs 2 lakh, police laid a trap where the suspects were to collect the cash.
Two men arrived at the pickup spot, were subsequently asked to provide their credentials. On checking, the cards were found to be fake. Sudhir was arrested, while the other man managed to slip away.
