Fake call centre conning US Asians busted in Makarpura

VADODARA: City police’s prevention of crime branch, busted a fake call centre in Danteshwar locality of Makarpura on Friday night and arrested its two operators, Vineet Rawal and Shailesh Yadav. The duo, booked for cheating and violating IT Act, was running the centre for over a year duping South Asians living in the US. During interrogation , cops were shocked to learn it was only the tip of an iceberg.
Police said the duo was part of the larger nexus of cheaters operating across the state under a Delhi-based man, Merchant Jordan. The duo told police that they get contact details of persons living in the US and those who have taken loans of amounts ranging between US$100 and 200.

The details are provided by the US counterparts of the extensive con network. Rawal and Yadav then contact these borrowers through US mobile phone numbers identifying themselves as executives of the company from which they have borrowed money. “They threaten victims who delay repaying their loans saying that their employers will be informed of their defaulter status which will cost them their jobs,” said in-charge inspector R C Kanamiya of PCB. When the scared victims agree to repay the loan, the duo asks them to repay by buying a Google play card of the value of their loan. They then take the card’s code and share it with Jordan through WhatsApp,” he added.
Jordan then shares the code with Chinese links who transfer cryptocurrency to Jordan after deducting their commission. Jordan then converts it into Indian money and transfers Rawal and Yadav’s share, said police.
