MANGALURU: The third
district additional and session court has
sentenced retired Bantwal tahsildar
T N Narayana Rao to one year
imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on him for taking a bribe of Rs 2,000.
In 2012, Rao was caught red-handed and booked by Lokayukta officials for taking a bribe to transfer gun ownership from complainant Satish Prabhu.
The complainant had approached Rao for transfer of gun ownership from his father to his name.
Rao demanded a bribe of Rs 3,000 for the same. Prabhu approached the Lokayukta and a trap was laid to catch him red-handed.
A Lokayukta team led by Dilip Kumar caught Rao while accepting Rs 2,000 from Prabhu.
During the raid, they also seized Rs 85,000 unaccounted cash from Rao’s office. The judge declared Rao guilty under the Prevention of Corruption Act and sentenced him to two years and three months simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs 20,000. The sentences will run concurrently.
Rao, 65, who retired a few years ago, stays in Yelahanka in Bengaluru.
