Call centre with 30 staffers ran racket in insurance aggregator’s name

GURUGRAM: An insurance fraud being operated by two men, including a BTech graduate, from Delhi was busted after Policybazaar — an online insurance aggregator — informed police that the duo had cheated several people by issuing fake policy papers in the name of the company.
The accused had cheated several customers and had earned at least Rs 50 lakh, police said.
Identified as Avinash Kumar Jha (28) and Mahender Singh Rajput (31), the duo had set up a call centre in Delhi’s Tihar village and had around 30 people employed under them, who were told that Policy Bazaar had outsourced their work to the accused’s company, police said.
“The duo was arrested from Subhash Nagar in Delhi on June 10 and taken on three days police remand. We have recovered more than a dozen mobile phones, laptops, datacard and cash from their possession. They were produced in court on Saturday and sent to judicial custody,” an officer of the cyber crime team said.
According to the police, one Namit Sukhija — a senior employee of Policybazaar — told police that several people had approached the company, with hard copies of the policies bought from Policybazaar. On verification it the documents were found to be fake. Sensing the fraud, the company filed a complaint on April 26. An FIR was registered under sections 420 (cheating) of the IPC and Section 66 of the IT Act at Cyber Crime police station.
The police took two months to track the fraud and finally arrested the auo from Delhi’s Ajay Enclave.
“Jha was the mastermind and has confessed to the crime. Jha had worked in private company in 2017. He along with Rajput hatched a plan to rob people in August 2018, and set up a call centre in Tihar village. They got details of vehicle owners from justdial and called them giving lucrative offers. They had a template of Policybazaar policy and would edit it and send it to victims. They recently shifted their office to Pitampura. We are investigating if they had more partners in the company. The call centre of Pitampura has been sealed,” said police spokesperson Subhash Boken.
