IMA meeting with striking docs remain inconclusive

Kolkata, Jun 15 (UNI) The meeting between the IMA delegation, headed by its president Dr Santanu Sen, with the striking junior medics at the NRS Hospital to end the impasse remained inconclusive today.

Despite Dr Sen’s pursuasion to the agitators to go to Nabanna and meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who invited them for a talk at 5 PM today, nothing concrete has emerged so far.

Several seniors doctors also today held a meeting among themselves and decided to lead a delegation to NRS to talk to their juniors.

The list of resignation of senior docs quitting government job was getting thick to thicker as some 40 medics of Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Hospital at Kalyani quit the job today,  taking the figure to around 1000.

Mr Sen said the attack on the medics is not new and it has become a phenomenon across the country, and for this IMA was fighting.

He said constant movement like this would alienate the medical fraternity from the common people.

However., there was no new reaction from the striking doctors, who insisted on Ms Banshee’s visiting NRS first and seek an unconditional apology for her remarks at the SSKM on Thursday.

The General Body of the striking doctors are presently holding discussion as to whether they would attend today’s meeting at Nabanna.

Ms Banerjee might visit the injured doctor at Neuroscience Hospital at Park Circus, which was one of the demands of the striking doctors.

Meanwhile, doctors of AIIMS Delhi on Saturday called off their protest and gave a 48-hour ultimatum to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to meet the demands of the protesting doctors.

In their ultimatum, the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) at AIIMS said that if the demands of the West Bengal doctors are not met within 48 hours, they would be forced to resort to an indefinite strike at the Delhi hospital.

The AIIMS Delhi doctors would, however, continue to wear red-stained bandages and helmets as a sign of protest.

“AIIMS issues an ultimatum of 48-hours to the West Bengal government to meet the demands of the striking doctors there, failing which we would be forced to resort to an indefinite strike at AIIMS, New Delhi. We hope that our colleagues across the nation will join us in this hour of need,” the statement read.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also launched a three-day nationwide protest and called for a strike on June 17 with the demand of proper security of the doctors in all hospitals.
