Huawei may also be considering Sailfish OS as replacement for Android: Report
  • Huawei may be considering the use of Sailfish OS in its search for an Android replacement
  • Specifically, the company may be considering a Russian fork of Sailfish OS called Aurora OS
  • As part of the deal, the company may produce and develop chips and software in Russia

It looks like Huawei may be looking at operating systems beyond its own HongMeng OS in its search for a viable Android replacement. According to a report by The Bell, the company may be looking towards Sailfish OS. More specifically, a Russian-made fork of Sailfish OS called Aurora OS. The report claims that the CEO of Huawei, Guo Ping met up with the Russian Minister of Digital Development and COmmunications, Konstantin Noskov to discuss the possibility.

The report notes that two things were discussed between Ping and Noskov. The first was the installation of Aurora OS on various Huawei devices. The second is the production and development of chips and software.

Sailfish OS was developed by Finnish company, Jolla, which was founded by former Nokia employee. A notable feature of the OS is that it is compatible with the Android ecosystem, so it can use Android apps. However, it is said to be fully independent and not just a form of Android codebase.

The move to an existing OS might be a more efficient move as compared to creating a brand new OS from scratch, which is what Huawei is said to be doing with its HongMeng OS. The company recently moved to trademark the HongMeng name, and its Vice President of Public Affairs says that the company is in the process of potentially launching the OS.
