San Francisco on Tuesday became the first US city to ban use of facial recognition technology by police or other government agencies. Supporters of the technology argue that facial recognition systems can help police fight crime and make streets safer.

Rights groups have raised concerns because of its reliance on huge databases with little oversight and potential for error.
