NASHIK: An unidentified person has been booked by police for sending obscene messages on social media to a group of women in the city.
According to the complaint registered with cybercrime police station, the group received a link that upon clicking led them to another page containing obscene messages.
According to an officer from cyber police station, the social media group was exclusively for women. It was around three days ago when a link was posted on the group. "It was obvious that women members clicked on the same to learn more about messages and that link took them to another page full of obscene messages," he said.
"It is difficult to tell at this point in time if the phone number of any of the members was hacked or if there was any issue with wrong link or it was inadvertently sent by any of the members," he added.
The exact reason for exposure of the members to the link would be found out only when the investigation is complete. The officer, meanwhile, has cautioned the social media group members to keep away from sending any such links in groups which can hurt the sentiments of anyone.
"There are some who purposely do such things and pass of links in other groups. But it is advisable to stay away from such things especially when these links are likely to cause tremendous harm to the society. The members are also expected to be responsible on the issue. If in case the sender of the message is found and the intention appeared to be immoral, the sender is likely to be punished as per the sections of IT Act," the officer said.

It should be noted that a similar incident had happened about a year ago when a link of obscene messages was sent from the identity of a lady doctor.
"We immediately met the then commissioner of police, Ravinder Singal, who first assured us to ensure that all people in my contact were told that they should not click on the link sent by me and also delete my number. Thereafter, a police team swung into action and police caught the accused from Rajasthan," the doctor said.
