'Garry Lyon would abolish Christmas': Polarising footy commentator divides fans for criticising a young star who embraced his opponent and boyhood hero DURING a match

  • Garry Lyon has been trolled online after criticising a young Aboriginal footballer
  • Lyon said he 'didn't like' Richmond's Sydney Stack congratulating his opponent
  • Stack embraced Adelaide's Eddie Betts moments after kicking incredible goal
  • Richmond was losing by an insurmountable 35 points with just four minutes left

Footy legend Garry Lyon has come under fire after criticising a young Aboriginal AFL star for celebrating with an opposition player who had just kicked a miraculous goal.

Just moments after Adelaide Crows champion Eddie Betts snapped a goal from right on the boundary line late in Thursday's night clash with Richmond, opponent Sydney Stack walked up and congratulated him.

The embrace was seen by many to be a sign of respect from a rising indigenous star to one of his heroes and a long-time champion of the game.

But retired champion turned commentator Garry Lyon saw it differently, questioning why Stack's show of respect couldn't have waited until after the match.

After hearing his comments on Fox Footy and later on SEN radio, fans took to social media to slam Lyon for his negativity towards a 'great moment'.

Talking about the moment on his regular radio show on Friday morning, Lyon said he wouldn't apologise for his stance.

'I'm not condemning Sydney Stack, he's a young kid. Philosophically, I don't like that and I don't apologise for that,' the 226-game AFL legend said.

'It's a great debate. It's modern-day footy versus old-school thoughts.'

But fans disagreed with Lyon's stance, with the abuse on Twitter beginning almost immediately after he made his comments on Thursday night.

'Great moment. I couldn't believe what Lyon was going on about. Too old school, embrace the current Garry,' one commenter wrote.

'You get the feeling Garry Lyon would abolish Christmas if he could,' one joked.

'So Garry lyon doesn't Like Stack and Betts' interaction after that amazing goal... you bald headed flog,' another said, referencing a sledge that saw one fan kicked out of the ground for abusing an umpire last weekend.

'Took less than a minute into Fox's post game coverage for Garry Lyon to complain about it. Might be time to mute him for the week,' one fan wrote on Twitter.

At just 19, Stack has been one of the breakout stars of the AFL so far this year.

But aside from his on-field efforts, he has also been widely praised for promoting his Aboriginal heritage.

During the annual Dreamtime at the 'G game last month he joined in a traditional war dance, before going on to help Richmond to a 23-point victory.
