GURUGRAM: Three men were arrested from DLF 5 on Wednesday for allegedly cheating a city-based
businessman on the pretext of getting a bank
loan passed for him. The accused, who didn’t study after
Class 12, cheated the man of around Rs 70,000, which the police have managed to recover.
Vijay Pal Singh, a resident of Gandhi Nagar, told police that he came in contact with the accused in January. “On January 10, I received a call from one of the accused who asked me if I needed a
bank loan. As I needed Rs 10 lakh loan, he sent me a
WhatsApp message informing me about the documents needed to get the loan passed. Three days later, he informed me that my documents had been verified and asked me to transfer Rs 3,500 to an account as file charge. Till January 18, I had deposited Rs 17,000 (excluding the Rs 3,500) as loan insurance amount and processing fee,” Singh said.
On February 5, Singh was asked to deposit Rs 21,000 as the first instalment, before the disbursement of the loan. Referring to certain terms and conditions, Singh was made to pay another Rs 12,600. The caller informed Singh that he had to pay at least two instalments before the bank clears the loan amount. Second instalment of Rs 16,527 was also transferred to the accused’s account on February 26.
After waiting for a few days, Singh tried contacting the accused but could not reach them. He approached the Cyber City police station in mid-march and filed a complaint. Following investigation, an FIR was registered against the accused under sections 420 (cheating) and 468 (forgery) of the IPC and Section 66D of the IT Act on April 10. The phone numbers were put under surveillance and the accused were nabbed from DLF 5 on Wednesday.
“The accused have been identified as Lalit Yadav (25), Sanjay (36) and Sandeep (34). They are residents of Charkhi Dadri in UP and are all Class 12 pass. They managed to get the phone numbers of people looking for loans and after winning their trust made them transfer money in the name of file charge, registration fee, document verification and advance instalments,” said police spokesperson Subhash Boken.
