BHUBANESWAR: The
Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to coordinate the repair work of three Fani-hit schools under its jurisdiction that suffered the maximum damage.
These three schools include the Ekamra Vihar Primary School in Kharvel Nagar, Janatanagar Primary School near Salia Sahi and Bharatiya Vidyalaya in Unit III.
The decision was taken after the district education office of Khurda requested the BMC administrator to take up the repair work of the three schools in order to ensure that they can be opened on time after the summer break on June 18.
"I want to bring to your kind notice that
Cyclone Fani caused extensive damage to the educational infrastructure in the BMC area. Many schools were damaged and need immediate action," the request letter issued by the district office said.
"It is requested that immediate repair work be taken up so that classes can start once the summer vacation is over. Kindly instruct the BMC commissioner to start the work at the earliest," the letter said.
As per the damage assessment by the school and mass education department, the
asbestos roofs of the two primary schools were damaged while the compound wall of Bharatiya Vidyalaya collapsed during the cyclone.
A senior civic body official said they have already started coordinating the repair work.
"The roofs of the two primary schools will be rebuilt on a priority basis," the official said.
It must be noted that as many as 6,498 schools were damaged in the cyclone across 14 affected districts including Khurda. "Most of the schools have already received the necessary repair," an official of school and mass education department said.
