MUZAFFARPUR: Death toll due to suspected acute encephalitis syndrome(AES) went up to 57 on Friday as 9 more children died since 6pm on Thursday.
Six kids died at
Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital SKMCH) while three succumbed to the disease at Kejriwal Matri Sadan(KMS) till 11 am on Friday. However, 16 new patients have been admitted at SKMCH and KMS in the said period.

Muzaffarpur on Friday morning. He took stock of the situation at the SKMCH and KMA, where still 84 children, 68 at SKMCH and 16 at KMS were undergoing treatment for AES like symptoms including convulsion,
high temperature and vomiting.
Pandey met SKMCH superintendent Dr Sunil Kumar Shahi, principal Dr (Professor) Bikash Kumar and civil surgeon Shailesh Prasad Singh along with other senior functionaries to inquire about the medical facilities to treat children suffering from AES.
Talking to media persons after review meeting, he said that an awareness campaign needs to be undertaken in areas where AES is prevalent. “We have already launched the awareness programme among the rural folks. This programme will be intensified to prevent the spread of the disease. Even the suggestions by the central team has been implemented and advisories issued to the district magistrates of 12 districts where the prevalence of AES is high," he said adding that SKMCH will be equipped with six additional ambulances to provide speedy help to the needful.
Pandey claimed that children suffering from AES are being provided with the best possible treatment in accordance to the guidelines fixed by the
World Health Organisation (WHO). A team of a professor, 3 associate professors, 4 assistant professors, 9 senior resident doctors and 15 junior resident doctors have been working day and night to treat the ailing kids. State government is very keen to provide every help in saving the precious lives,” said the minister confirming the deaths of 57 children due to AES in Muzaffarpur in the last 20-22 days out of whom 47 died in SKMCH while 10 other deaths were reported from the private Kejriwal Hospital.
Pandey preferred to keep mum when asked about late start of awareness programme. However, an official source of the health department said that the district officials as well as the officers from health department had been pressed in the election works. "Since, maximum number of staffs from every department of the government had been deployed for successful conducting of election work, so the awareness programmes came to a halt. Now, it has been kicked off only after more than 30 children have lost their lives," he said on anonymity.
