Pune: Officials of the city traffic police on Thursday launched ‘Aabhaar’, a reward system for commuters obeying traffic rules.

The Traffic Branch of the Pune police will now reward people who do not have any pending e-challans related to violation of traffic rules in the city.

The minimum fine amount for any offence is  Rs 200, while the maximum is Rs 2,000.

Police officials said that such commuters, who follow all traffic rules, will get discount codes on their phones which can be encashed at selected malls, restaurants and different outlets.

Speaking about the novel initiative, DCP (Traffic) Pankaj Deshmukh said, “We just thought of the initiative and various merchants started approaching us. The move will be a reward for people who obey traffic rules. We have urged the merchants to keep the least discount value to Rs 100. It is up to the merchants to decide the discount value.”

While the move will encourage people not to violate traffic norms, it will also help police officials to keep track of offenders to periodically collect the challan amount.

How does ‘aabhaar’ work?
Officials of the traffic police and different merchants are connected through a mobile application. A commuter’s vehicle number is searched on the mobile application to look for pending challans. If there are no pending challans, the traffic police will take the phone number of the commuter and he will receive a message with the discount coupon which will be valid for a month. The commuter can encash the same after showing the coupon code to the merchant.
