MUMBAI: Changing his appearance by shaving off his moustache and beard and getting a new haircut did not stop Saki Naka police from recognizing and picking up a dacoit wanted by Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh police for multiple serious offences.

Saki Naka police pounced on a tip-off about the accused, Ateeq Shaikh (22), wanted in murder, attempt to murder, extortion and dacoity cases. Shaikh had fled UP after allegedly killing gram panchayat head Dinesh Dubey last month and taken shelter at his father, a taxi driver's home at Yadav Nagar in Saki Naka. His neighbours thought Shaikh was a truck driver till the police showed them pamphlets with his photo and Rs 50,000 reward by Pratapgarh police for a tipoff. Saki Naka police will receive the cash reward. "Shaikh is one of five members of a deadly dacoits gang," said assistant inspector Abdul Shaikh of Saki Naka police.
Pratapgarh additional superintendent of police Avanish Kumar Mishra told TOI: "The gang has been involved in over a dozen murders. On June 5, the special task force killed one of his gang members, Taukir, in an encounter." Saki Naka police senior inspector Kishore Sawant said, "UP police team will take his custody on Friday."
