Violence in hospitals: Who's to blame?

NEW DELHI: The murderous assault on Monday on a junior doctor in Kolkata has caused massive protests among medicos in the country. To extend support to the stir of West Bengal doctors, they have called for a suspension of all non-emergency services like OPD and routine surgeries.
What is to be noted is that it isn't the first incident of a violence in a hospital. Many medical establishments and doctors have been witness to such violence before either by patients or their attendees. According to a finding by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), 75% of doctors across the country have faced physical or verbal abuse inside the hospital premises. Between 2013 and 2014, there were as many as 32 cases of workplace violence at AIIMS. Maximum cases of violence took place inside casualty wards.
