GHAZIABAD: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will miss yet another deadline to open the UP Gate-Vijay Nagar portion of the Delhi-Meerut
Expressway.
The project, which is seeing the four-lane NH-24 (now renamed NH-9) being upgraded into a 14-lane highway, has moved at a slower pace than the NHAI expected in this 8km stretch that has Noida and Indirapuram on either side.
The latest completion target is July, which also looks difficult to meet because work on the main expressway corridor — which is the access-controlled six-lane portion of the 14-lane highway — hasn’t begun in some parts. This includes the UP Gate and Khoda area where a bridge also needs to be built over the Hindon canal.
NHAI project director R P Singh said construction work for the entire 19.2km Phase 2 package (from UP Gate to Dasna, Phase 1 was in Delhi from Sarai Kale Khan to UP Gate) is around 52% complete. And the stretch between UP Gate and Vijay Nagar is about 55% complete, which means it’s just over the halfway mark. This stretch also has seven full-fledged underpasses and three smaller ones for light vehicles.
“The delay has been attributed to shifting of transmission lines at three points on the stretch. The electric poles that are being transported from Kolkata have not reached us yet,” said Singh. “In all likelihood, we will be in a position to open this portion (UP Gate-Vijay Nagar) by July,” added Singh.
Before this, the NHAI had set tentative dates in April, May and June for this portion of the highway to open. The official deadline, though, was June.
“Integration of traffic from Indirapuram, Sidharth Vihar and Vijay Nagar on the Ghaziabad side and from Noida will happen through these underpasses,” said Singh.
The main expressway will have only one access point on this stretch, at Abhay Khand. “From Abhay Khand near Gaur office in Indirapuram, the Delhi-Meerut expressway can be accessed. There are two more access points, at ABES cut and AKG engineering college, which will open in the next phase in December 2019,” said Singh.
