HIGHLIGHTS

  • 17:41 (IST)

OUT! Russell goes for the big shot as he is used to but it is Wood who ends up celebrating as Woakes claims the catch in the deep. Not what West Indies would have wanted at all.

  • 17:32 (IST)

DROPPED. Woakes - who saw Gayle dropped off his own bowling - proceeds to put down a dolly and the man he dropped is Russell. Naturally he proceeds to slam a big six two balls later. He ends the over with another six. 15 overs to go now and this could be a long 15 overs for England if Russell bats the distance.

  • 17:20 (IST)

Holder doesn't take much time to set, slamming Root for a six down the ground that he made look absolutely effortless. But Root has the last laugh as Holder gets a leading edge that flies straight back to the bowler.

  • 17:13 (IST)

OUT! Root gets the breakthrough that England so desperately needed. Hetmyer looks to play one down the ground but spoons a simple catch back to the (part-time) bowler who is delighted. Exactly what the doctor ordered for England and West Indies now four wickets down.

  • 16:55 (IST)

SIX! Pooran begins the over by absolutely hammering Rashid for a six over long-on. That's the only boundary of the over but some good running means West Indies end the over with 12 runs. They're done playing the waiting game.

  • 16:48 (IST)

FOUR! It's Hetmyer's turn now to end an over with a boundary. Rashid had bowled well up till that point but the final ball of the over sees him give the ball a little air and Hetmyer smacks him hard down the ground. These two are putting together a good little partnership here.

  • 16:06 (IST)

This looks dead straight! Hope tried to work it to the on side but was beaten by Wood's extra pace and got pinned right in front of the stumps. After Umpire didn't give it out, Morgan wasted no time in reviewing and the replays suggest it was stone dead. West Indies have now lost two wickets in no time and are 56 for 3 at the end of 14 overs. Pooran and Hetmyer will have to rebuild now.

  • 16:01 (IST)

Plunkett gets the big fish! He hits one on the length and the left-hander went after it but ended up mistiming it into the hands of Bairstow at deep square leg. This is a huge wicket for England as Gayle was looking dangerous. He goes for 36.

OUT! Russell goes for the big shot as he is used to but it is Wood who ends up celebrating as Woakes claims the catch in the deep. Not what West Indies would have wanted at all.

Root's fifth over was going well until a knuckle ball down the leg side missed everyone and went for 5 wides. Oops. There are 14 overs to go now and England will look to finish things quickly.

Fifty comes up for Pooran with a single off Rashid. New man Andre Russell, meanwhile, looks to go big from ball one but completely misreads a wrong one. He learnt his lesson then and played out the remaining balls with minimal fuss, only taking a single off the final ball of the over.

Holder doesn't take much time to set, slamming Root for a six down the ground that he made look absolutely effortless. But Root has the last laugh as Holder gets a leading edge that flies straight back to the bowler.

The breakthrough for England has expectedly slowed the scoring rate down. But it's worth remembering that Holder can hit a long ball and Pooran is well set at the other end. The hosts know they'll need more wickets, and fast.

OUT! Root gets the breakthrough that England so desperately needed. Hetmyer looks to play one down the ground but spoons a simple catch back to the (part-time) bowler who is delighted. Exactly what the doctor ordered for England and West Indies now four wickets down.

Much better over from Rashid. He has some success by pitching it slightly wide of leg stump to Hetmyer, who looks to swing but is done in by the extra spin. This is turning into a good contest now. Don't forget West Indies still have Russell, Holder and Brathwaite in the dressing room!

Joe Root - yes, this is not a typo nor a joke - comes on to bowl. Morgan is throwing anything at the wall to see if it sticks. Unfortunately for him, Root isn't the answer in terms of a breakthrough but it is a more economical over, going for just 2 runs.

Hetmyer and Pooran are ensuring the scoreboard stays ticking. Even if they can't hit boundaries, they are running well and that is evidenced as they take 7 runs off the 27th over. Rashid doesn't do much wrong here but the running between wickets is good.

Hetmyer, not to be out-done, smases Stokes for back to back boundaries to begin the 26th over. No pressure then. Two singles and a double bring about the end of another good over for the West Indies. Both players in the mid-30s now and will be looking to get their half-centuries sooner rather than later.

Fifty run stand is up for Hetmyer and Pooran and this is the first fifty run stand for the 4th wicket for West Indies against England in the World Cup. It's also their first 50-run stand with one another. Can they kick on from here? West Indies sure hope they do.

FOUR! It's Hetmyer's turn now to end an over with a boundary. Rashid had bowled well up till that point but the final ball of the over sees him give the ball a little air and Hetmyer smacks him hard down the ground. These two are putting together a good little partnership here.

Stokes gets his second straight over and it wasn't as good as his first. The batsmen did try to attack him a little bit more and it worked out in the end as Pooran got away a streaky boundary in the fine leg area to end the 22nd over.

Morgan clearly wants more wickets as he now turns to Adil Rashid. The leggie begins with 3 singles before beating Pooran with a quicker one that spun away from the left-hander. In the end only 4 came off that over.

Ben Stokes gets his first over of the game and it's a decent one, going for just 3 runs. Both Pooran and Hetmyer are happy to rotate the strike and only look to out away the bad balls, smart strategy given West Indies lost three wickets in quick succession and still have 30 overs to play out.

Plunkett's expensive 17th over is followed up two overs that are economical - Wood gives away just 2 while Plunkett follows up with a good over of his own. England need more wickets though otherwise the dot balls here will count for nothing.

Wood definitely celebrated the most when Gayle finally went!

Plunkett begins the over with a wide and it only gets worse as he strays wide again and is slashed for a boundary by Pooran. Hetmyer ends the over with a hard pull that flies past mid-wicket. All in all, 12 runs come off that over.

Wood bowls a troubling line for most of the 16th over, keeping the ball just outside off stump and getting Hetmyer to poke at a couple of balls before he edges one for a single. Decent over for England, that. They'll want more of this.

Time for drinks, West Indies are 60 for 3 in 15 overs. Both Gayle and Hope are now gone and Hetmyer and Pooran will have to build a partnership. WI need a big total on the board.

Lucky! Hope tries to work one fine but ends up edging it just to the right of Buttler who dived but couldn't get near it. First boundary for the wicketkeeper-batsman.

Not bad from Wood. The right-arm paceman has managed to keep Gayle quiet. Gayle will take his time against both these pacers and then explode like he did against Archer and Woakes.

Mark Wood comes into the attack.

Hope has played some very good shots so far but hasn't been able to go past the 30-yard circle. Decent start this from the pacer, just five runs off it. Hope will have to get a move on or else it will put more pressure on Gayle.

Liam Plunkett comes into the attack.

England vs West Indies Live Score, ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 Match in Southampton Latest Updates: OUT! Russell goes for the big shot as he is used to but it is Wood who ends up celebrating as Woakes claims the catch in the deep. Not what West Indies would have wanted at all.

England vs West Indies in the ICC World Cup 2019 on June 14 (Friday) will be broadcast on the Star Sports network and Live streaming will be available on Hotstar. The match will be played at the Rose Bowl, Southampton and will begin at 1500 HRS IST. You can also follow all the action on our live blog.

England and West Indies will resume their traditional rivalry when the two sides face off again at the 2019 ICC World Cup game in Southampton on Friday (June 14). One man will once again be in focus in the contest — ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle.

The powerful West Indies opener was simply sensational in the five-match ODI series against England earlier this year, notching up 424 runs in those games with a strike of 134.17 with two centuries and two fifties. His highest score in the series was a 97-ball 162 with 14 massive sixes.

Gayle, in his fifth World Cup for the West Indies, will face a new challenge in the form of Barbados-born Jofra Archer, who has impressed everyone with his searing pace in the World Cup so far. Archer was not yet eligible to play in the ODI series in West Indies but will be one of English skipper Eoin Morgan’s spearhead along with Mark Wood, if he manages to pass a fitness test on Friday.

In fact, it will be a battle of pace at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton as West Indies will look to give back in earnest unleashing the likes of Oshane Thomas and Sheldon Cottrell with the new ball.

England will be delighted by the return to full fitness for Jos Buttler, who injured his hip in the last game against Bangladesh. But WI skipper Jason Holder would still be fretting over the fitness of prolific all-rounder Andre Russell, who is suffering from chronic knee issues and was not part of the team in the rained-out encounter against South Africa last week.
