KOLKATA: One person was killed and three others were injured when a SUV skidded and hit a median near Captain Bheri on EM Bypass around 1.20am on Thursday. One among the injured is stated to be critical. The accident took place when the car was heading towards Science City after crossing Chingrighata.
The deceased person has been identified as Bibek Singh (28), a resident of Jharkhand's
Dhanbad. His friend, Arkya Sarkar (24), a resident of
Titagarh, is currently admitted at the ITU of the Charnock Hospital.
According to cops, four persons were travelling in the car. "The car had reached the left turn near the Bypass Dhaba, the spot where the EM Bypass cuts in to it and a service road emerges, which helps motorists to avoid the signal. The rains had lashed the area and it seems the car was speeding. The driver lost control and rammed into the median before being dragged towards the Captain Bhery side flank. A second car - where the associates of the victims were travelling - stopped and rescued the injured and took them to the Apollo Hospital. Their families, however, shifted them to Charnok hospital from there," said an investigating officer. The Pragati Maidan police has lodged a case and handed over the probe to the fatal squad of Kolkata Police.
If Eastern Metropolitan Bypass expectedly tops the accident-prone zone list, what makes it even more unsafe for commuters is due to multiple construction activities there. Police say the sharp turn from the Silver Spring Club towards right on both the north and south flanks can be deceitful after the Maa flyover has become operational.
