The police on Wednesday arrested eight persons, including two Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) functionaries, in Velachery for allegedly kidnapping a 30-year-old businessman, confining and physically torturing him in order to collect exorbitant interest.
The victim Raji Sheik John, staying at a lodge in Velachery, went missing on Monday.
His mother Balkis, 54, from Mannadi, complained to the police alleging that her son had been kidnapped and tortured by Baskar, a functionary of AMMK, and others.
The victim had borrowed ₹1.20 lakh from Baskar.
After learning that John was well off, Baskar threatened him and demanded that he pay more interest, the police said.
As John refused, Baskar and his associates kidnapped him. The police arrested the suspects and rescued the victim on Tuesday evening.
