Poor visibility owing to strong winds

With cyclone Vayu looming over the western coast, airlines have issued advisories on flight delays and disruptions till Thursday midnight.

On Wednesday, Goa, Mumbai and Pune airports reported bad weather. When gusty winds starting lashing early in the morning, the Mumbai airport switched its operations from the main runway to the secondary runway.

The spokesperson of Mumbai International Airport Ltd said, “The airport is reporting 20-minute delays owing to strong winds. There were two go-rounds and two flight diversions.” Flightradar24, Swedish airline and airport tracking website, reported a 40-minute delay in arrivals affecting 155 flights. The website reported a 52-minute delay affecting 302 departures.

Mumbai airport has been reporting delays for the past two days. On Monday evening, operations were put on hold for close to an hour because of low visibility and the secondary runway had to be used.

Several domestic and international flights were diverted from the airport, including a United Airlines flight between New York and Mumbai, which was diverted to New Delhi. A Thai Airways aircraft was damaged after it hit a guard light while vacating the runway.
