One of his friends loses ₹25,000

The police are tracking down an unidentified fraudster who created an email account in the name of the principal of St. Joseph’s College Autonomous, which was used to send a mail asking for a donation for a charitable cause.

According to the police, one of the principal’s friends donated ₹25,000. The fraud came to light when the principal, Father Victor Lobo S.J., got a call from his friend who informed him that he had made a donation.

The Ashok Nagar police have taken up a case under the IT Act and efforts are on to track the accused.

In his complaint, Fr. Lobo said the fraudster had not only created an email but also used it to send a mail to his contacts requesting for a donation of ₹48,000 towards a heart surgery for a four-month old baby named John Verghese. The mail also contained a bank account number and other details.

“While many ignored the mail, one of his friends moved by the plight of the infant, transferred ₹25,000 online. We are now trying to track down the accused using the bank account details,” said the police.
