COIMBATORE: The crime branch of the city police on Wednesday arrested a 36-year-old
job racketeer, who was absconding for more than five months.
The accused was identified as Margosis Navamani.
“T Janakiraman of Salem, who was searching for job, came to know about the accused through Vishupriya, a resident of Salem. She informed the 26-year-old victim that a company in Hong Kong was looking for 10 candidates and asked him get in touch with Navamani,” a police officer said.
After attending an interview for the job at NEXG Print Service in Saravampatti, Janakiraman was asked to pay 2lakh. He was also asked to submit his passport along with other documents to get the job within a week.
“Navamani told Janakiraman that over 100 people from across the state had submitted their passports to get jobs in foreign countries. Janakiraman paid 1.90lakh in instalments and submitted his passport within a few months,” the official said. “But after some time, Janakiraman, who grew suspicious, asked Navamani to return his money and passport. But he refused. Apart from Janakiraman, the accused had also collected passports of five other people and a sum of 4.60lakh.”
Based on a complaint from Janakiraman, crime branch registered a case against Navamani in January and launched a search for him. He was arrested on Thursday and lodged in the
Coimbatore Central Prison.
