KANPUR: Local BJP MP Satyadeo Pachauri has called for tougher laws and stringent punishment against perpetrators of sexual harassment, sexual assault and rape.
“If law could be in my hand, I would have murdered those who commit rape,” Pachauri said, addressing a gathering at a police felicitation organised by Indraprastha Welfare Society in Ratan Lal Nagar on Tuesday.
Pachauri said whenever people came to him with complaints of murder and rape, he directed the police station concerned to act tough against the accused. “The society is equally responsible (in preventing such crimes). We need tougher laws and stringent punishment against perpetrators of rape, sexual assault and harassment,” he added.
The MP’s push for stricter laws comes at a time atrocities against children are being reported with chilling regularity.

On June 2, a three-year-old was found dead in a garbage dump three days after she went missing in Tappal. The girl’s father claimed she was killed because he failed to repay a loan of Rs 10,000.
Rapes and murders of children have been reported from Hamirpur, Jalaun and Kushinagar, the latest being the sexual assault on a six-month-old in Jalaun on Wednesday.
