Ninety-four families have been shifted to relief camps so far in the district with sea erosion turning severe in the current southwest monsoon season.
All the camps are in and around Valiyathura in the Thiruvananthapuram taluk, sources said.
Sixty-seven families consisting of 268 people have been shifted to the UP School, Valiyathura, which is by far the biggest of the four camps.
Fourteen families (54 people) have been moved to the nearby BUDS School while 11 families consisting of 20 families have been shifted temporarily to the fisheries godown, Valiyathura. A three-member family has also been shifted to the Fisheries technical school.
Reportedly, a number of families in the region have also moved to homes of their relatives after sea water entered their residences.
In Neyyatinkara taluk, one family has been shifted to a school, district authorities said on Wednesday.
Protect coast: MLA
Meanwhile, V.S. Sivakumar MLA, who visited the affected regions and the camps, demanded the government to initiate measures to supply rocks and sandbags to protect the coast.
He also demanded that a control room be opened to monitor the situation.
“The camps are not being supplied with adequate water or food and other basic amenities. Medical teams should visit the camps to prevent the outbreak of epidemics,” he said in a statement.
The government should also declare free rations and financial assistance to the fishermen families in the region as fishing has been made impossible due to inclement weather, Mr Sivakumar said.
According to an IMD alert, high waves can be expected along the Kerala coast till Thursday evening.
