DBT team lauds Vet Varsity Canine & Research Infrastructure

Ludhiana: A high-level expert committee of the department of biotechnology, government of India, comprising advisers to the department S R Rao, A K Rawat and eminent scientists H V Batra, DRDE Gwalior, Gaya Prasad, VC, Meerut Agriculture University, R K Singh, director, IVRI, and Brig Devendar Kumar of the Army visited Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, to review the progress of the ongoing canine research centre and networks project.
Scientists from various institutes like IVRI, IIT Indore, state veterinary universities of Tamil Nadu, Assam and Karnataka participated in this meeting and presented the progress of their research work.
J P S Gill, director of research and project coordinator, said that the department of biotechnology was granted Rs 10.30crore for canine research centre, which include three network projects, 11 in-house R&D projects and three projects to establish facilities and services. GADVASU is also the project monitoring unit of this centre and the grant for GADVASU projects is Rs 7.6 crore.

The team visited the newly established research units of the centre — veterinary hospital database management system, canine orthopaedics, semen cryopreservation, dental unit, renal disease unit, gastroenterology as well as the project monitoring unit.
Dr A S Nanda, Vice-Chancellor, told that this mega-project is working in several areas like canine nutrition, multivalent vaccine delivery system, diagnostics and biomarkers for canine distemper, TB, leptospirosis; development of novel suture materials and implants for canine arthropathies, development of biomaterials for root canal treatment and crown therapy in dogs.
