Cyclone Vayu: Things You Should Be Aware

Before the cyclone, you should stay patient, keep your mobile phones charged so that you can contact someone, listen to the radio and see news channels for warnings.

The very severe cyclonic storm known as “Vayu” has approached India on 13 June. According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone Gale wind speed of 135-145km/hr blows with the sudden increase to 160km per hour very likely over North Arabian Sea and Gujarat coast with phenomenal sea conditions. The Gujarat government has evacuated about three lakh people while Diu has evacuated over 10,000 people from low lying areas. 

As per IMD, Cyclone Vayu is possible to move towards north-northwestwards for some time and then northwestwards adjoining the Saurashtra coast affecting Gir Somnath, Diu, Junagarh, Porbandar and Devbhoomi Dwarka with wind speed 135-145/kmph gusting to 160 kmph from the afternoon of 13 June 2019.
 
 Indian Meteorological Warning (IMW)

Indian Meteorological Department warns that places of Saurashtra and Kutch likely to affect with widespread rainfall, extremely heavy rainfalls at isolated places for 13 -14 June 2019.  The sea condition is phenomenal over the north Arabian Sea and Gujarat coasts till 15 June 2019. The fisherman is advised not to enter into North Arabian Sea during next 12 hours.
 
 Impacts and Arrangements 

The most affected areas by Cyclone Vayu are Gujarat and coastal areas over the Arabian Sea. The Gujarat government has evacuated over three lakh people from low lying areas of Gujarat and about 10,000 people from Diu Island to safer places. The government official has instructed the officials to make every possible arrangement with a mission “Zero Tolerance and Zero Casualty”.

Read newspapers to update yourself with weather reports. Prepare an emergency kit with essential items and not keep sharp objects loose. The most important is that every fisherman must be aware of sea shore announcements while listening to radios or watching televisions.
