KANNUR: Congress has set up a panel to probe the defeat of the party in
Alappuzha in the
Lok Sabha elections, said KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran on Wednesday. He said party's IT cell convener
Shashi Tharoor has been asked to probe into the cyberattack on senior leader A K Antony.
Addressing the media in Kasaragod, Ramachandran said the party has set up a three-member committee headed by senior leader K V Thomas to conduct a comprehensive inquiry to ascertain the reasons behind Shanimol Osman's defeat in Alappuzha.
The KPCC president was in Kasaragod to hand over the fund collected by UDF to the families of the slain Youth Congress leaders Kripesh and Sarath Lal at Kalliyot.
Agreeing that there was some lack of vigilance in Alapuzha, Ramachandran said the party has taken the electoral defeat seriously. "During the election, there were some minor issues which were sorted out. The task of the committee is not to blame any individual for the defeat, but to study the reasons," he explained.
Congress leaders P C Vishnunath and K P Kunhikannan are the other members of the panel. They have been asked to submit the report in two weeks.
Ramachandran also said the party is confident that the UDF would win the byelection in the six assembly constituencies.
He added that the cyberattack on AK Antony has crossed all limits of discipline. "Some people have unleashed an attack on social media blaming Antony for the failure to form pre-poll alliances in several states, and he is pained at this," he said.
If needed, an independent agency would be asked to probe the attack on Antony, he explained.
Ramachandran also justified the expulsion of AP Abdullakkutty from the party, and said the decision was taken after seeking his explanation. Abdullakkutty did not respond with clarity even after six days of serving the notice, explained Ramachandran. He also said the party is ready to give membership to former CPM leader COT Nazeer, who was recently assaulted allegedly by CPM supporters, if he wanted to join the party.
